Firethorne Equips Katy Schools with Rape Aggression Defense Gear

Firethorne, West Houston's newest master-designed community, has equipped the Katy Independent School District (Katy ISD) with gear for a nationally recognized rape aggression defense program beginning Spring 2006.

Firethorne underwrote Katy ISD's purchase of four sets of Rape Aggression Defense (R.A.D.) student gear and one aggressor suit. Firethorne General Manager Wayne Meyer presented the R.A.D. System to Katy ISD Superintendent Dr. Leonard Merrell at the District's Law Enforcement Center.

"The R.A.D. System is extremely well respected throughout the country for its outstanding record in teaching women, both young and old, realistic self-defense tactics and techniques," said Dr. Merrell. "We are extremely grateful to Mr. Meyer and Firethorne for providing us with funding for this vital program for Katy students."

Katy ISD Police Sgt. Carol Kelly, a nationally certified R.A.D. instructor, says R.A.D. "empowers women mentally by teaching avoidance and awareness." She added: "If someone grabbed you or your daughter, R.A.D. techniques will help increase your chances of getting out safely." Sgt. Kelly will teach the potentially life-saving 12- to 15-hour course in Katy ISD to female students over age 12 and female teachers. It is not a Martial Arts program.

The Rape Aggression Defense System is a comprehensive course that begins with awareness, prevention, risk reduction and risk avoidance. It progresses to the basics of hands-on defense training. Each student receives a workbook/reference manual that outlines the entire Physical Defense Program for reference and continuous personal growth. The manual is the key to a free lifetime return and practice policy for R.A.D. graduates.

Firethorne is a 1,400-acre residential development strategically located in Katy/Fulshear on FM 1463 near the crossroads of the 1-10 West corridor, the Westpark Tollway and the Grand Parkway. Situated within Katy ISD, it includes 150 acres of parks and recreational amenities, a 12-acre lake with greenbelt, hike and bike trails, parks and playgrounds, discovery-rich wildlife observation area and a natural bird habitat. It will feature a resort-style multi-level family swim center, sports fields, tennis courts, a competitive swim center and a neighborhood Community Center with a fully equipped fitness facility.
